Et la Photographie dans tout ça?

Avant de quitter Paris, j’ai voulu voir à quoi ressemblait ce pèlerinage : j’ai trouvé des images colorées, des dômes dorés, une foule imposante, un peu comme à La Mecque. Des images belles et descriptives que l’on publie dans les magazines, le genre d’images que j’aurais pu faire il n’y a pas si longtemps. mais aujourd’hui, ma vie de pèlerin, austère et sans confort m’impose une autre approche photographique, un autre regard. Sans mon appareil photo, je ne suis plus photographe, je passe inaperçu. Je peux travailler au plus près des gens, en osmose. Je dois raconter autre chose.

Le smartphone m’impose une autre écriture photographique. Ce n’est pas l’appareil photo qui fait le photographe, mais l’expérience. L’appareil de prise de vue n’est qu’un simple outil. C’est le choix d’écriture qui est important, ce qu’on raconte et comment. J’’ai donc changé de point de vue. je travaille au plus près des gens, des portraits, des regards. J’ai tout de suite décidé d’écrire cette histoire en noir et blanc, en format carré.

La passion d’Hussein ressemble étrangement à la passion du Christ ou de la Vierge. On pourrait se croire à Lourdes, à Czestochowa ou à Fatima. Ces pèlerins ressemblent finalement à tous ceux que j’ai connus dans mes nombreux voyages, en particulier avec le pape.. Mais ici, je ne suis plus journaliste. je ne suis plus un voyeur, Je suis comme eux, je suis Eux, un simple pèlerin du XXIe siècle.

And Photography in all this

As cameras are forbidden, I have no choice but to use the phone. A while ago, I could not have imagined such a situation, but today’s smartphones produce images of sufficient quality, which changes the game. Before leaving Paris, I wanted to see what this pilgrimage looked like: I found colorful images, golden domes, a huge crowd, a bit like in Mecca. Beautiful and descriptive images that are published in magazines, the kind of images that I could have made not so long ago. But today, my life as a pilgrim, austere and uncomfortable, imposes another photographic approach, another look. Without my camera, I am no longer a photographer, I go unnoticed. I can work closer to the people, in osmosis. I have to tell something else. The smartphone imposes another photographic writing on me. It is not the camera that makes the photographer, but the experience. The shooting device is only a simple tool. It is the choice of writing that is important, what we tell and how. So I changed my point of view. I work close to the people, portraits, looks. I immediately decided to write this story in black and white, in square format. Hussein’s passion strangely resembles the passion of Christ or the Virgin Mary. One could think of being in Lourdes, Częstochowa or Fatima. These pilgrims finally resemble all those I have known in my many travels, especially with the pope. But here, I am no longer a journalist. I am no longer a voyeur, I am like them, I am them, a simple pilgrim of the 21st century.
