MAURITANIA Attar

The city of Attar

Attar is a city in southeastern Mauritania, known for its historic Attar Mosque, one of the largest mud-brick structures in the country. The mosque, which dates back to the 19th century, is an important religious and cultural site in Mauritania and is considered a symbol of the country’s Islamic heritage. Attar is also known for its traditional markets and its location at the crossroads of trade routes connecting West Africa with North Africa and the Mediterranean. Despite its historic significance, Attar is not a well-known city outside of Mauritania, and is not widely visited by tourists. However, its history and cultural heritage make it an important part of the country’s cultural landscape.
